Keep an Eye on Your Tires

Your tires also take a lot of abuse, so it’s important to check their tread depth and air pressure regularly. If you notice any bald spots or low air pressure, it’s time for new tires.

Get Regular Tune-Ups

As your car gets older, it’s important to get regular tune-ups to keep it running properly. This will help to avoid any major issues down the road.

Signs That Might Mean You Need Catalytic Converter Replacement

Catalytic converters are devices that are installed in the exhaust system of automobiles and other internal combustion engines. They convert harmful pollutants in exhaust gases into less harmful substances. Catalytic converters are an important part of a car’s emissions control system, and they have been required on all new cars sold in the United States since 1975.

If you believe you might be experiencing catalytic converter problems, it is important to act now before more damage is done. Catalytic converter replacement is more expensive than catalytic converter repair; so expensive that it can sometimes render a car a total loss. If this happens, you still have viable options for selling a totaled car in Cincinnati.

Continue below to learn the most common signs that suggest you need catalytic converter replacement.

Common Catalytic Converter Problems

A Catalytic converter is an important part of a car’s emissions control system, and it can fail over time. There are a few signs that may indicate a failing catalytic converter:

► Decreased Fuel Economy
► Loss Of Power While Driving
► Unusual Sounds Coming From The Engine Area
► Check Engine Light Is On

If you notice any of these signs, it’s important to have your car checked out by a mechanic. Catalytic converter replacement or repair can be expensive, but it’s necessary to keep your car running properly and to avoid damage to the engine.

Average Cost of Catalytic Converter Replacement

Catalytic converter replacement is one of the most expensive automotive repair services you can have performed on your car. Including parts and labor, the average cost of catalytic converter replacement falls between $945 and $2,475, depending on the make and model of your car.

Total Loss Vehicles

Sometimes, the cost to replace a broken catalytic converter is more than what the vehicle is actually worth. At this point, the vehicle would be deemed a total loss, or totaled. A total loss vehicle is a car that has been damaged so badly that it is considered unsafe to drive, or too expensive to repair. Insurance companies often declare a car a total loss after an accident, theft, or other major incident. If you have a total loss car, you will likely need to buy a new one. Be sure to shop around and compare prices before making a purchase. You may also want to consider leasing a car instead of buying one outright.

How to Add Years to Your Vehicle’s Lifespan

So, you want to know how to make your car last longer? Well, the answer isn’t so cut and dry. But at least the answer doesn’t require you to spend a whole lot of money. In fact, the more you attend to this list of “four cheap ways to extend the life of your vehicle”, the less money you’ll ultimately spend in the long run on fuel, car maintenance, and repair.

Routine Automotive Maintenance

The number one way to add more years to the life of your vehicle is through routine automotive maintenance. Refer to your owner’s manual for factory scheduled maintenance recommendations for your make and model vehicle. Routine car maintenance should include periodic filter changes, fluid changes and refills, brake pad replacements, inspections, tire service, and more. The better you stay on top of routine maintenance, longer your car will last.

Stay on Top of Fluid Refills

The automotive fluids inside of your vehicle are critical to your car’s overall performance and efficiency. It is vital that you regularly check your fluid levels and make any refills as needed. The automotive fluids needed by all vehicles include motor oil, power steering fluid, transmission fluid, brake fluid, windshield wiper fluid, radiator fluid (coolant), and battery fluid. Depending on your make and model vehicle, you may require differential fluid instead of transmission fluid. A well-lubricated car runs safely and efficiently, therefore saving you a lot of money.

Do Not Skip an Oil Change

As mentioned above, the automotive fluids in your vehicle are critical for overall performance and efficiency. Oil changes are vital to the engine because it lubricates the internal moving parts that are exposed to high levels of friction and heat. If you want to extend the levy vehicle, never skip an oil change. Follow your owner’s manual recommendation for an oil change schedule.

Do Not Ignore Strange Noises

It is important to pay attention to what your car sounds like when you are driving it, parked with the engine on, and stopped in idle. Noises that are out of the ordinary should be investigated and diagnosed by a licensed mechanic. If your car is making strange sounds that are abnormal to its typical operation, it is trying to tell you something. The sooner you catch an automotive repair, the less damage you do to your car and the longer it will last in the long run.

Car Not Worth a Dime?

Do you believe your car has lost any and all value? If so, you are wrong. Your car has important scrap value that is desirable to many salvage yards in Ohio. Choose a Cincinnati junk car buyer who will pay you the full scrap value that you deserve for your junked or totaled vehicle. Then use the money to take better care of your new car so that it lasts even longer!

Transmission Fluid Leak FAQS

How Can I Tell if I Have a Transmission Fluid Leak?

You can distinguish transmission fluid from other automotive fluids by taking a closer look at the leak. Transmission fluid is typically red, however, if it is old, it can take on more of a brownish color. Transmission fluid typically smells like petroleum, unless it is expired, in which case it will smell burnt. Transmission fluid typically leaks from the front or middle section of the vehicle. If the leak is coming from the rear end of your vehicle, it is likely not transmission fluid. Lastly, transmission fluid is very oily and slick to the touch, similar to motor oil. If the liquid leaking from your car has a similar consistency, it may be transmission fluid.

How Often Should I Change the Transmission Fluid in My Car?

It is recommended to refer to the owner’s manual of your vehicle for manufacturer instructions on transmission fluid service. Although it is different depending on the make and model of a vehicle, the general rule of thumb is to flush and refill transmission fluid every two years, or 30,000 miles; whichever comes first.

Does Transmission Fluid Go Bad?

Transmission fluid can expire and go bad. You will know transmission fluid is old or bad. If it smells burnt and looks dark or brown.

What are the Signs of Failing Transmission?

If you notice that your car is slow to start from a stopped position, the transmission seems weaker, or your transmission fluid levels are always low, there may be something wrong with your transmission. If refilling your transmission fluid doesn’t help, you’ll need to take your car in for professional service and diagnostics.

What Can I Do if I Cannot Afford to Replace a Blown Transmission?

Auto parts like engines, catalytic converters, and transmissions are very expensive, so they often exceed the current value of the car being worked on. So, it is no surprise that you cannot afford to replace blown or bad transmission. You’re not alone. Fortunately, there are several Cincinnati junk car buyers eager to take that old hunk of junk off your hands and pay you cash on the spot for it!

Summertime Car Care Tips

Hitting the open road in your favorite ride is an experience like none other. However, think about all of the pollutants and impurities that your car’s exterior is being exposed to? And if you like to ride with the air conditioner on, you may even be exposing the interior cabin to such pollutants. Insects, bird droppings, dust, dirt, sand, UV rays, vaporized chemicals, and much more can all damage the exterior aesthetic of your vehicle, as well as the interior mechanical systems and components. It is recommended to take the proper precautions to protect your car from damages caused by excessive summertime meteorological conditions, especially if you’re preparing for a long distance road trip.

Here are some elements to consider when developing a car care protection plan for summertime:

Car Waxing

A good, old-fashioned car wax can really enhance your level of automotive protection against the summertime meteorological conditions, especially sun fade. Just be sure to choose a quality car wax product for optimal results and protection. In fact, it’s encouraged to take your car in for professional car wax service.

Interior Leather Polish

If your vehicle has leather seats, it is highly recommended to treat them on a routine basis with a quality leather conditioner. Leather conditioner products come in various forms, such as wipes, spray, and oil. Just be sure to read the manufacturer’s instructions closely and test a small area to ensure that the product is compatible with your leather. If you have up leather or some type of synthetic leather upholstery in your vehicle, be sure to choose a product that’s designed for synthetic upholsteries.

Car Washing

If you want your vehicle to have the highest level of resistance against summertime damages, it is important to routinely clean it, inside and out. Even the thinnest layer of dirt and microscopic debris on the outside of your vehicle can begin the process of corrosion. Because the weather is so dry in the summer, you can expect a lot more dust and dirt floating around in the air as you drive. So, even if you think your cars clean, it’s a good idea to wash the exterior on a weekly basis in the interior on a monthly basis.

Smart Parking

Sun fade is one of the most common automotive damages that happens in the summertime. A highly effective method to avoid automotive paint fading in the summer is to always seek shade when parking and try to park in the garage or under a carport as often as possible. You can also insert a reflective windshield panel on the inside of your car to divert sunlight.

How to Jumpstart a Car With a Dead Battery

Whether you are just starting out as a first-time driver or car owner, or you are in the middle of a dead car battery conundrum, knowing how to jump start a car will be an important skill set to have in your automotive aptitude arsenal. Continue below for detailed instructions on how to jump start a dead car battery using a conventional set of jumper cables.

Free Junk Car Towing Cincinnati Ohio 513-991-4776
Free Junk Car Towing Cincinnati Ohio 513-991-4776

What You Need to Jump-Start a Dead Car Battery

To jump start a dead battery, you will need two essential resources: a set of jumper cables and another working vehicle. You can purchase a set of jumper cables at any local automotive retail store or home improvement store. You can also purchase them online through relevant retailers. Jumper cables come in all different variations, ranging in quality, application, and price.

For the purpose of jump-starting in that car battery, you really only need a very basic set of jumper cables. Don’t spend more than $40 unless you are equipping a heavier duty vehicle for emergency roadside purposes. Larger trucks and vans might require a more expensive set of jumper cables because they use higher power batteries.

In order to jump start a dead car battery, you will also need another operational vehicle, called the booster car. The jumper cables will work as a conduit, transferring power from the good car battery to your dead car battery. This jolt of power is what we call the “jumpstart”, which should adequately power your battery and start your vehicle. If a jump-start fails the first time, it’s recommended to give it another try. However, if jump starting a dead car battery continues to fail, you likely need car battery replacement.

Guide to Jump Starting a Car

Park the booster vehicle side-by-side with your car. You may also park the booster vehicle in front of your car, hood to hood. Whatever positioning you choose, just be sure that both car battery receptacles are close enough so that the jumper cables can reach each one at the same time.

Before getting started, be sure that both vehicles are completely off.

Next, open the hood and secure it in place with the attached latch. Do this with the other vehicle too.

Locate the car battery, then identify the negative (-) and positive (+) battery terminals. They may also be labeled as POS (positive) and NEG (negative). Do this with the other vehicle too.

If the battery looks dirty, use a rag to gently clear away any debris. If you notice green, blue, or white-colored corrosion around the battery terminals, do not attempt a jump-start. This is a sign that you need a new car battery.

Next, unwind your jumper cables, but do not allow the clamps to touch. In fact, from this point on, do not allow the clamps to touch any metal surface at all, otherwise it will create a spark and pose a fire or burn hazard.

Starting with the dead car, attach the red-colored positive (+) clamp of the jumper cable to the positive battery terminal. Move to the booster car and do the same thing.

Go back to the dead car and attach the black-colored negative (-) clamp to the negative battery terminal. Move to the booster car and do the same thing.

Now start the booster car. Wait several minutes, then start the car. You may need to hold the ignition key over for a few seconds to get it to start. Let your car run for 10 to 20 minutes to get a good charge. If it will not hold the charge, you could need alternator repair or a new battery.

Finish by disconnecting the jumper cables in reverse order: Remove the black clamp on your car, then remove the black clamp on the booster car. Remove the red clamp on the booster car, then remove the red clamp on your car.

Keep an Eye Out for These 3 Common Auto Repair Shop Scams

Unfortunately, not all automotive repair mechanics can be trusted. Now that’s not to say that every mechanic is crooked in some way or another, but in the industry, auto repair shop scams do happen to innocent car owners like yourself. If your vehicle is in need of repair, or is at an age that comes with a lot of breakdowns and mechanical issues, you need to learn how to watch out for these kinds of unethical auto shop cons.

Continue reading to learn 3 common auto repair shop scams and how to avoid them.

How a Shady Mechanic Might Try to Take Advantage of You

It is easy to trust whatever a mechanic is telling you, after all, you don’t know anything about automotive repair. But with the proper knowledge, you can equip yourself with an eye for any unethical customer service. Most auto repair shop scams involve gouging money from customers, while others blatantly waste their time and make life inconvenient. So, how does a Shady mechanic try to take advantage of car owners?

Check Engine Light

An unethical mechanic might take advantage of an illuminated check engine light. Because a check engine light can be a warning for all sorts of different mechanical and electrical issues within a vehicle, a mechanic could decide to be dishonest with the customer by telling them the underlying issue is more serious than it is, and therefore more expensive.

Hourly Labor Rates

Mechanics typically charge by the hour for labor. If a mechanic wanted to be unethical, they could milk the clock so to say, taking much longer to repair your vehicle in order to charge you more. For instance, what could have been done in 30 minutes is billed for 3 hours. This scam can have a monumental impact on a person’s budget since the average auto shop hourly rates are usually between $75 and $150. If you have your car repaired at the dealership, the hourly labor rates are even higher.

Liberty Repairs

This auto repair shop scam is one that mechanics tend to get away with more often because customers are too afraid to speak up or do not know enough about automotive repair and mechanics to argue the need for whatever work was performed on the vehicle. Liberty repairs is a loose term used to describe when a mechanic performs additional repairs or replacements on a vehicle without the customer’s permission. This way, they can charge for more labor and parts, even if the vehicle didn’t necessarily require it right away or at all.

Don’t let yourself go down to auto repair rabbit hole. Junk your car and put your profit towards a newer, more reliable vehicle! Contact GC’s Junk Cars at 513-991-4776 for professional cash for cars service in Cincinnati Ohio. Our junk car buyers only pay in cash, and we even provide free junk car removal service!

How to Tell If You Need to Replace the Shocks and Struts in Your Car

There are certain types of automotive repairs that are vital to the overall safety and performance of your vehicle. If you neglect to keep up on regular scheduled car maintenance and fail to tackle minor auto repairs as they come, you can expect your car to have a shorter lifespan. When it comes to shocks and struts, this car care principle especially applies.

Continue reading to learn more about the role of the shocks and struts in your vehicle, plus the common signs that suggest you need to repair or replace them. Is your car already on its last leg and you are not sure if you can afford automotive repair? We have information about that down below, too.

What are Shocks and Struts?

Have you always wondered what shocks and struts actually do in your car? Have you ever hit a big bump in the road while driving? Well, had you not been equipped with good condition shocks and struts, that bump would have caused your car to aggressively bob up and down, and possibly even bottom out and scrape against the pavement.

Shocks are components of the car suspension system that aids the coils in impact absorption. Struts bring together the shock absorbers and the coils, positioning the suspension system as one structural unit, which in turn, also provides added structural support.

Most modern vehicles have struts on the front axle and shocks on the back, while many other cars will only have struts on both axles. There are very few vehicles that have only shocks and no struts. Check your owners’ manual to learn what your ride is equipped with.

The Importance of High-Performing Shocks and Struts

Shocks and struts are very important because they are a vital partner to your car’s overall suspension system. They allow car tires to maintain proper traction with the road by balancing the weight of the vehicle evenly. In turn, this reduces unwanted vehicular movement like bouncing, bobbling, and swaying. Basically, good condition shocks and struts provide a smooth, stable, and safe ride.

This is especially important for drivers who frequently commute with small children, babies, and pets. It is also very beneficial for anyone who suffers from trigger induced migraines or body aches and pains. When you are feeling this way, you don’t want your car bumping all over the road. Even the smallest discrepancy in pavement can cause a vehicle to aggressively bobble and dip when the shocks and struts are not in good condition.

Common Signs of Bad Shocks and Struts

If you are wondering if you need to replace the shocks and struts in your vehicle, look for these telltale signs:

▷ Uneven Tire Tread Wear
▷ Rough and Bumpy Idling
▷ Unstable Braking/Turning
